It is also here on the land that surrounds the farm that the last battle on English soil, The Battle of Sedgemoor 1685 took place. Here on the night of July 6th James II marshalled his troops where they were camping next to the Bussex Rhine to battle against Monmouth and his men. Monmouth’s unsuccessful plan for a surprise night attack and the lack of proper equipment meant they were soon routed out. With dawn came the task of rounding up those who had managed to escape. The royal troops began the task of dealing with the prisoners, more than 200 were kept in Westonzoyland church and burying the corpses left on the battlefield. The casualties are reckoned as about 400 rebels who died in battle, with many more killed in the pursuit and rounding up of those who tried to escape, while only about 50 regular soldiers lost their lives and about 200 were wounded. Monmouth himself fled the battlefield and was found hiding in a ditch at Horton, and taken to London, where he was beheaded on Tower Hill on July 15th.
